White Water Rafting

White Water rafting

Round Table hits the rapids

Summer’s here, and with it comes the daft suggestions on what active Round Tablers can do with their time on a long sunny evening. The last meeting of June saw the club donning rubber suits, crash hats,  paddles and going in search of a creek. And they found the best one in the UK.

Three boatloads of intrepid paddlers from Long Eaton Round Table went to the National Water Sports centre near Nottingham for a great evening of white water rafting. Although as some of the pictures show, often it was more like white-water submarining.

The first run down the course for the boats was easy enough, but lulled some into a false sense of security. On the second run, one capsized and threw all of the crew out. Most managed to get back in, but a couple of guys had to do their best log impressions and lie back trying not to hit the underwater obstacles.

And over we go...

And over we go...

When not falling into the swirling waters of the River Trent, the boats tried all sorts of tricks, such as standing the boat on its nose – normally with some pour unfortunate in the bows acting as ballast.

Note the blue helmet under the water.

Definintely the wettest event of the year so far, but great fun. To see all the pictures from an exhilerating evening, click this gallery link.

Long Eaton Tabler Walks for Charity

Paul H
Long Eaton Tabler Paul Haskins will be setting out later in June on a 100 mile walk across Scotland to raise money for the Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths (FSID).

Paul is doing this in memory of Finlay McCaffery who died at the age of 8 months on 6th March 2005 (Mothers Day), Finlay would have been celebrating his 5th birthday on the day the walk finishes 21st June (Fathers Day).

All proceeds from this event will be going direct to the FSID to help them with their research into Cot Death.

Please help raise as much money as possible as this is a fantastic charity that really helps the parents and families of the people who are unfortunate enough to have to deal with cot death as well as researching what causes it. You can donate from the Just Giving website.

Chain of Office handover

Dave Welch hands over to Mark Elm

Dave Welch hands over to Mark Elm

The club AGM saw the appointment of new club officers. Most notable was  last year’s chairman Dave Welch handover of the leadership reins to Mark Elm. Members of the club hoped secretly that Dave did not also handover his Ladybird Book of  Uproariously Funny Jokes. I guess we’ll find out at next year’s Charter Night.

Club President Mark Shaw also handed over this honorary post to LERT veteran Shaun Brennan. And completing the appointments was the election of Rob Westerman as Vice-Chairman.

Christmas Collection

Community Service Chairman Justin writes:

Another well-organised doorstep Christmas collection meant that LERT were able to give out almost £4,000 to help over the festive season eighty-two needy families & individuals in the Long Eaton area. Additionally, food hampers were given to a lucky twenty-four recipients. Another example of LERT at it’s best supporting the local community.

Macmillan provide practical, medical, emotional, and financial support. They address concerns such as how will I get to my hospital appointment?  Who will walk my dog? How will I pay the bills when I can’t work? Who will listen and understand?

Helena Curtis, Fundraising Manager for Nottinghamshire praised the club saying “This is a fantastic achievement – we are most grateful!”.

Three Peaks Money Donated

certificates-21Monies raised by the club’s 2008 Three Peaks Challenge have been donated to a number of causes including the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

A donation of £1800 helped grant 12 year old Bethany’s wish to watch the premier of ‘Camp Rock’ at the Royal Festival Hall. Bethany is from Cornwall and is living with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. In addition to granting her special wish, Make-A-Wish was also able to give Bethany and her family a trip of a lifetime with a visit to the London Eye and a river cruise to see London’s famous sights.

Bethany said “Thank you very much, I really appreciated it. It was a dream come true”.

Whilst out there they will be levelling a pitch which means hiring a generator & power tools, taking out their funds raised to buy stationary for a school and to buy clothes for a children’s orphanage.

Tabler Down!

By Our Intrepid Reporter on the spot – Mr Elm.

Ramsey the organiser of this year’s annual LERT ski trip, which is underway in Les Carroz (Grand Massif region, France) has become the first casualty of the trip. Unfortunately he has succumbed to the organisers curse for injury. Whilst attempting a green run (the easiest of all ski runs) on his snowboard (he was warned about the dangers of being “on a tray”), in near perfect conditions, Ramsey caught the edge of his board on a lump of snow & stumbled forward at low speed. The result was severe pain in his lower leg leaving him incapacitated on the slope. Several other skiers in the group attended to him in his hour of need as all his fellow boarders had long since left the scene. Onsite first aid was given in the form Ibrufen tablets & whiskey to numb the pain. However Ramsey was still unable to continue despite the skiers best efforts. It was thus decided to loan him a set of skier’s poles to allow him to limp off the slopes. His snowboard was removed from the scene by a caring skier.

Later from the comfort of his hotel, Ramsay, who had already had to wear the “cape of shame” due to the poor weather on his arrival in the resort was seen relaxing in true Tabling style.

Seven of the party headed back to the UK today as they still had jobs to return too. The remaining four hard core skiers remain in the resort to enjoy the now near perfect ski conditions in true Table style following the last few days of inclement weather.

Finally, upon his return to Blighty, Ramsey commented “Yes the curse of organizing a table skiing trip continues, everyone told me it’s a poisoned chalice. However we had a fantastic time in Les Carroz, and apart from 1 day of torrential rain the skiing conditions were great. I would like to thank everyone who came on the trip, especially the tablers who got me down the side of a mountain with a minimal amount of fuss. Top men”.
