Belvoir Brewery Visit

A big thank you goes to Grantham & District 307 for organising a brewery visit at Old Dalby. A superb turnout ( and beer )  helped tabling fellowship between our clubs. George Loydall our National Quiz winner  finally got back his trophy which was swagged by Grantham at a previous area event.

60 seconds later the trophy was gone

Unfortunately he didn’t hold onto it for very long before it swagged again ( the shame ). George decided to rename the trophy the Long Eaton & Grantham fellowship trophy. To which there will be at least 2 meetings a year in each individual programme. The idea of the trophy will be to bond our two tables together in what is the fun & fellowship of Round Table. Special thanks goes to

Grantham Chairman John Whaler and everyone in Grantham 307  for organising this cracking  night out.

AGM 2011

Robert Westerman passes the reins of power to Rob Murdy

Long Eaton Round Table held their AGM in early April, which marked the changeover in the club’s year. Chairman for 2010-11 Robert Westerman handed over to Rob Murdy, and an exciting election for Vice Chairman resulted in Ian Adkin getting the nod. The four recently chucked out members received their commemorative tankards.

Chairman Rob thanked all the committee and club for supporting him in what was another successful year for the club.

2010-11 President Graham Hill gave a short lecture on the various uses of the word “up”, and how confusing it is, and finished by saying his time in Round Table is now up. He handed the honour of President to Stewart Cliff.

Dave gets his tankard too.

So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, adieu

The Lockestone pub was the venue for this year’s chuck out evening. Once a tabler reaches the lofty age of 45 it’s time for them to be booted out the club in typical round table style. This year’s hapless evictees were Ulrick Sandstrom, Greg Whitfield, Dave  Welsh and Nigel Glenister. Our distinguished Danish chiropractor Ulrick ” The Saxon ” Sandstrom was dressed in a suitable Viking Outfit ( although many said he looked more like a yeti, you decide ). Greg Whitfield or Long Eaton’s answer to Mark Zuckerburg was dressed as an Elf ( the dwarf outfit i was told was already rented ) Ex Squady Nigel went up a rank for the evening and had a distinctive chinese take on the traditional army uniform  and Welshy came in his normal work clothes. We had a good turn out for the evening including many 41 ‘s who were braying after new blood. Much fun was had watching the victims fail various tasks and making them run around Long Eaton in their sensible attire.

Butchery Night

Pierre' s basement, don't ever go in

This fantastic evening was enjoyed  by all at Paul Walkers Butchers in Long Eaton. the evening consisted of learning new skills in butchery. We were all taught how to bone a chicken ( insert joke here ) , make and pack locally sourced sausages and learn about all the different cuts of meat. Special thanks goes the staff of Paul Walkers who patiently watched us massacre countless chickens, giving advice along the way.

L.E.R.T International Night Tobogganing Team

Graham Marks, Ramsey Dawson, Mark Campbell and Mark Elm

While away on the annual L.E.R.T skiing trip 4 intrepid Long Eaton tablers decided to enter a 3Km night toboggan Run in Hochgurgl. They had heard it was a scary run, but after a few beers  in the Nederhutte they decided  nothing was too difficult for the mighty 461. They had no idea what was in store for them, it was the most frighting run of their lives but also the funniest. Ex President Mark Campbell careered into a wooden wall several times, Ramsey Dawson didnt make one corner at all and buried himself in a snow drift, Mark Elm couldnt turn the toboggan  for toffee and Graham “need for speed”  Marks was the only one who had any degree of control of the sled. The L.E.R.T International Night Tobogganing Team  are still adamant  that they won a trophy that night despite the other tablers  insisting we  simply borrowed an ornamant from the hotel reception, outrageous.

If you would like  to see how exhausting the run was, check out this video of past chairman Mark Elm crossing the finish line.

L.E.R.T Skiing Trip 2011, Obergurgl

Obergurgl, Austria Jan 2011

I’m afraid to report that the curse of organising the Long Eaton Round Table skiing trip has not been broken. This year’s trip organiser past Chairman Dave Liddington had the misfortune of breaking a couple of ribs while attempting to snowboard. The irony is that he was wearing special metal wrist guards to protect himself in case of a fall, but as Dave fell forward he landed on them smashing his iphone and ribs in the process. Luckily it did not stop him and the rest of the group having a cracking time in Obergurgl, Austria.  A total of 10 tablers went on this year’s trip, weather and piste conditions were fantastic as was the Nederhutte. A special mention goes to Dave Fletcher the youngest member on the trip who filmed and edited a great video us all attempting to look cool on the slopes. Check out his video below…

Firework fundraising raises fifteen hundred pounds

Treetops Hospice Cheque Presentation

Long Eaton Round Table has presented the proceeds of our fireworks evening to Treetops Hospice.

We have been holding our annual bonfire/fireworks party at Treetops Hospice in Risley since 2004. Since then, this event has raised around £10,000 for Treetops Hospice.

Long Eaton Round Table chairman Robert Westerman handed over the cheque for £1,500 to Treetops Hospice chief executive George Cameron on Tuesday 15 February.

The donation comes as Treetops Hospice records January as having the highest number of new referrals ever taken in one month.

George Cameron, chief executive of Treetops Hospice, said: “The support we receive from groups like the Long Eaton Round Table is absolutely invaluable, especially as more and more people need our services. In January alone, we had 150 new referrals and we’re currently looking at ways to ensure more people can benefit from the valuable respite care we provide.”

Routes for Santa’s Sleigh

It is that time of year again when Long Eaton Round Table’s Santa Sleigh will be going around the towns of Long Eaton, Breaston and Sawley, collecting for charity. The sleigh, complete with Santa and his helpers, will also be in the centre of Long Eaton on the Saturdays of 4th, 11th, and 18th of December.

Long Eaton Round Table is committed to raising money to go towards local charities and causes. All monies raised by the Christmas collection help us fulfill this commitment.

The route plan showing where we will be and when can be found by clicking on this link. Please note that while we try our best to reach every street on the plan, sometimes circumstances dictate that we are unable to get to them all before it gets too late in the evening for the kids to come and meet Santa.

Flying Tablers Win in Ilfracombe

Flying Tabler

Tablers from Long Eaton Round Table thought it would be a wizard wheeze to enter the annual Ilfracombe Birdman competition to see how far a chap can fly – unpowered – off the end of a pier before splashing down into the drink.  Chief pilot was Squadron Leader Ashley ‘Ginger’ Campbell, accompanied by wingmen Flight Lieutenant’s Dave ‘Buster’ Welch and Paul ‘Chocks-Away’ Haskins. Groundcrew was Flight Sgt Mark ‘Pops’ Shaw.

The chaps built their splendid Mark 2 Black Arrow the day before, and painted it in Long Eaton Round Table colours and markings. Dispensing with a test flight, the chaps gathered in the Officers Mess for a few G&T’s and a sing song.

Up before the larks, the chaps were roused from their beds by their WAAF”s. After a few preflight checks, the crew transported Air Force 461 to the take off area on the pier. After witnessing a few sorry efforts from competing squadrons, Ginger completed a perfect take off and flew for several fractions of a  second. But it was enough for Long Eaton Round Table to clinch the trophy.  Well done chaps!

Here’s a video of the epic flight.

Charity firework display

Long Eaton Round Table will again be organising one of the best firework displays in the East Midlands on Friday 5th November 2010.  All proceeds to go  local charities.
